Olympic Coastal Cluster (2009 - 2012)

Adler, Sochi, RUSSIA, 2009 - Tatiana Maroseva (55) stands among her radishes in the Imeretinskaya Valley near Adler, Sochi. Just behind her garden and the house that she has extended over the years is a high blue fence. Not long after this photograph was taken, the neighborhood was largely swallowed by construction projects, new hotels, and an oceanfront promenade. One of the Olympic stadiums now occupies the site where her radishes and house once stood. She was offered a large new property not far away, in a model village reminiscent of American suburbia: red roofs, a small plot of land. Despite the village’s cheerful exterior, no one was very happy with it. The houses were poorly and quickly constructed, we are told. The amount of land per household was less than promised and the ocean was further away, so fewer tourists wanted to rent rooms. Furthermore, some people were unable to prove that they owned the houses as a result of the complex registration laws in the Soviet Union and Russia. But the Olympic machine raced on. Some homes were demolished shortly after the inhabitants were removed by the police.
