Adler, Sochi, RUSSIA, 2009 - In five years’ time this will be Sochi 2014, the event millions of people will talk about for years to come.
The residents of Sochi compare the arrival of the Games with an enormous spaceship that has descended on the plains of Sovchoz Rossiya, so alien is it to them. For decades the Russian summer capital, this will become the Olympic winter capital, a transformation from black to white, a complete revolution. When we took this photo in 2009, the sovchoz's land had just been expropriated. Refugees from impoverished Abkhazia, a few kilometers away, were temporarily allowed to take over the wasteland behind the blue fences. They grew corn and grain and lived in this extended trailer.
This is the least touristy part of Sochi, with fewer sanatoriums but more family hotels, small businesses, and farms. The new ice skating rinks will soon be built on this land. From here, the most expensive road on earth will ascend into the mountains and the ski slopes around the village of Krasnaya Polyana.
Nearby, plans are underway for transport harbors, a new airport, a high-speed rail link, five-star hotels, a media village, an athletes' village.... Work has yet to begin, but Putin has promised that everything will be ready on time. For $12.5 billion, this will be the most compact Games ever without congestion.
