Welcome to the online archive of independent documentary photographer Rob Hornstra (1975, The Netherlands).

The series currently featured on this homepage are all part of The Sochi Project. Together with writer Arnold Van Bruggen, Rob has been working since 2009 to tell the story of Sochi, Russia, site of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

The Sochi Project has been documenting the explosive region around Sochi in the Caucasus – from the little known, renegade country Abkhazia in the south, to notorious breakaway republics such as Chechnya and Dagestan.

Work from The Sochi Project has been awarded with the New York Photo Book Award, World Press Photo Award, Sony World Photography Award, Magnum Expression Award and the Canon Prize for Innovative Journalism.

Older projects like 101 Billionaires (2008), Roots of the Runtur (2006) and Communism & Cowgirls (2004) can be viewed by clicking on the 'Galleries' button in the top menu.
